You can’t really set a wedding date until you’ve secured a location for your wedding reception (and ceremony), so the sooner you tackle this task, the better—do it 10 to 12 months in advance, if possible. Once you’ve narrowed down your choices, meet with the banquet manager (or other senior representative) at each place to hash out the details. Following are the key questions to ask before you decide to book.

What services does the rental fee include?

Some reception halls provide catering services as well as all the necessary equipment (tables, chairs, linens, tableware and so on), while others offer only the room, requiring you to take care of equipment rentals. The site should provide a banquet manager who will be present on the day of your wedding at no extra charge.

Is the rental fee cheaper if we don’t book a Saturday night?

If you book a Friday or Sunday night you’ll likely get a lower rate. Rental fees also vary per month—you’ll get a better deal if you book a date during low season (usually considered the months of November through April).

Are other events scheduled on the same day?

Try to avoid booking a banquet hall that’s hosting another wedding simultaneously—you want the staff’s attention to be focused entirely on your event. It’s more common for sites to book an afternoon and evening event on the same day, which usually isn’t a problem.

What is your alcohol policy?

Your catering fee might include a full open bar, for which you’ll be charged either a flat fee or by the hour— or you may have the option of being charged based on what, and how much, guests actually consume.

Are your health department and insurance certificates up to date?

Reputable sites meet health codes and carry liability insurance in case someone becomes severely injured while on the property. If there’s no paperwork to prove these things, you don’t want to do business there.

Are there adequate restroom facilities?

In general, you’ll need at least two bathroom stalls for every 100 guests; for 150 guests, four or more stalls are ideal.

Can you accommodate physically challenged guests?

While most buildings will have ramps and elevators, do a walk-through to see for yourself how well these features will meet the needs of your wheelchair-bound guests.

Are there any restrictions we need to know about?

If a site is located in a heavily residential area, you may be legally required to close down your party at a certain hour. Also ask about fire hazards — some sites do not allow the use of taper candles or sparklers, for instance.

What is your payment and cancellation policy?

Upon signing, you may be asked to provide a security deposit. Find out if, and under what circumstances, your money is refundable, and make sure this is stated in the contract.

Hint: Don’t assume anything! For example, if you’re getting married in the hot summer months, be sure to ask if your site has air conditioning. You don’t want any unpleasant surprises.

There is a new breed afoot.

He has opinions, strong opinions, and he is not afraid to voice them. He is adamant about the catering, he knows the ideal ceremony location, and he is certain the two of you can accommodate his growing list of invitees. He is inflexible, he is determined. He is getting married, darn it, and his needs will be heard.

Contrary to the stereotype of the groom schlepping through his assigned wedding tasks (tux, groomsmen, music and honeymoon), this generation of grooms are increasingly involved in their wedding planning. And while brides may love having their eager groom to discuss the floral choices with, more conflict may also arise in this pre-marital flurry of decisions and indecision. A groom’s involvement may escalate from having strong opinions to a case of having too many chefs in the kitchen (as if in-laws and friends weren’t already contenders).

The involved groom has numerous preferences which may fly contrary to the bride’s ideal, and the key is to address these encounters with care. Here’s how to negotiate your groom’s enthusiastic involvement, while maintaining the sanity that you have worked so hard to maintain.

1. Emphasize your strengths and delegate!

Gone are the days of “his” and “hers” wedding tasks. Is your groom undoubtedly the foodie of the two? Have him head up the search for the caterer and sample the cakes. Is he the creative, artistic type? Let him explore invitation options and table centerpieces. Are you a musician and have strong opinions about what constitutes acceptable tunes? Book the band and set the playlist yourself. By harnessing each of your strengths onto duties where you naturally flourish, the planning process will become more fun and the outcome fantastically unique.

2. When gridlock occurs, ask questions first.

Power struggle. Read these two words and note that they are likely at play when you both have drawn your line firmly in the sand. Couples often get caught up in fighting for their victory, simply because it’s habit and it feels better to win than lose. Instead, try to see things from his perspective before defending your own. Ask what led him to feel so strongly about this? What outcomes does he hope to accomplish? How would it feel if he missed out on this? The answers might surprise you. Shifting the focus from winning to understanding the issues is an effective way to break the standoff. Often a compromise will emerge. And more importantly, the relationship will remain intact.

3. Maintain emotional congruence.

Conflict will arise when one or both of you has a rigid preconceived notion of how your nuptials “should” be, and it’s often influenced by outside factors. Rather than focusing on the “shoulds” or societal expectations that so often are attached to a wedding, make an effort for both you and your partner to pay attention to your inner voice. It is easy to become swept up in wanting to please relatives, vying for acceptance, or trying to fit the mold of what others may expect from you based on outside factors, like career, income bracket, family, lifestyle, and personality. Head this off by talking with your partner about your idea of what others expect. Are the expectations unrealistic? Are pressures from outside sources real, or are they inflated in your own mind? Discuss together what you think others expect, and what each of you feel are your “shoulds.” Next, shift the focus to looking within to find out what matters to you. If there were no consequences, no preconceived notions, what would you envision? Take time to reflect on your own thoughts and listen to your instincts as your guide.

4. Let your partner influence you.

Are you feeling like emotional road-kill after a talk with your bridesmaid? Is your head spinning about the nuances of dinner seating arrangements? Now is the time to cuddle up to your involved, opinionated groom and allow him to help with your concerns. Often, he’ll provide you with a perspective you hadn’t considered. By talking about your worries, you will get emotional support from your guy, while showing your deep respect for his perspective. And your highly involved groom? He’ll be glad that you value his opinion, and in return will be more likely to listen to your advice when he needs guidance.

An involved groom makes for an involved husband, and that is a predictor in marital satisfaction. So while it may have come as a shock to find your groom passionate about the wedding planning process, it’s helpful to see it for what it is. He cares about your wedding, he cares about you, and yes, it’s his big day, too.

Reds and greens certainly reflect the season, but overdo this color combo, and your wedding may seem more holiday-oriented than you intended.

What’s Hot Now: Consider a less-is-more approach to your color palette: Silver and white with crystal accents can add some serious glamour to your winter wedding. For your ceremony, try a white velvet aisle runner trimmed with white satin ribbon, or decorate the altar with a crystal curtain backdrop adorned with hanging strands of elegant white phalaenopsis orchids. Don’t worry, animal rights activists, horsehair does not come from our equine friends; it’s a synthetic fabric often used on the underskirts of gowns to create a cleaner shape and a crisper hemline. Continuing with the trend of turning dresses inside-out (see last season’s corsets), designers are now exposing this underlay fabrication, either as a visible hemline treatment or a lavishly looped sash or bodice detail. It works to create incredible volume and dimension on ballgowns and also provides a unique, frothy-yet-modern textural element.

The Trend: Blush

Wearing a wedding gown in a non-white or ivory hue was, until recently, considered a pretty radical move. Then, a few seasons ago, we began seeing subtle pops of color—from the faintest hint of silver or lilac to bright lettuce green—but color was still the exception rather than the rule. This season, however, blush and pink shades appeared on dozens of runways, marking its official debut as an expected—not quirky—wedding gown hue. Perhaps this has something to do with Reese Witherspoon’s blush Monique Lhuillier wedding gown. If Reese, a paean to traditional, conservative dressing, chooses pink, it’s clearly time to give it a try.

The Trend: Lace Sleeves

Since April bridal market fell just a few weeks before the Royal Wedding, several designers were inspired by Kate Middleton and what she might wear. For a great majority, this meant lace sleeves—a sleeker, more contemporary version of the voluminous sleeves that engulfed the young Princess Diana so many years ago. Turns out the recently dubbed Duchess of Cambridge did end up wearing lace sleeves to her wedding, and it’s only a matter of time before this regal look catches on in a big way. We can’t wait.

The Taste of Home Cooking School Show at Branches Catering, West Long Branch, was a huge success attended by young and old to watch Culinary Specialist Eric Villegas whip up easy, tasty dishes from the Taste of Home Cookbook. The Cooking Show was hosted by 94.3 The Point with Eric Villegas being introduced by morning anchors Lou and Liz.

VIP attendees were treated to special hors d’oeuvres prepared by Branches’ Chef Jaime Fierros and his culinary team while listening to Branches Managing Partner, John Lombardo, give tips on wine selection, tricks to uncorking and the proper way to taste a wine. Following his discussion, he raffled off select wines, as well as a wine tasting dinner for two at Branches.

Once the Cooking Show began, the ebullient Eric Villegas warmly welcomed his guests as he created Pumpkin Whoopee Pies with candied ginger and cream cheese frosting. He explained that the Taste of Home doctrine of cooking is creating easy-to-prepare dishes that are both satisfying and flavorful, many of which are replicated from traditional, comfort food recipes. According to Villegas, Taste of Home is all about “cooking, caring and sharing.” The Taste of Home Cooking School is America’s leading cooking school program, inspiring more than 300,000 passionate consumers each year at 300 events across the country.

During Villegas’ two-hour cooking demonstration, he prepared ten mouthwatering recipes. In addition to the Whoopie Pies, he made a Wisconsin BBQ Chicken Pizza in a quick countertop oven; Pulled Pork Tenderloin Sliders with whole cranberry relish and pickled onions; Chicken & Rice with Thai Curry, and a Ground Nut Stew.

With any wedding it is often the reception which will require the most planning and attention to detail. Your wedding reception will be the biggest party you will ever organize and as such it is important your wedding reception decoration is perfect.

When thinking about your decoration you need to take into account several factors including:

The style of your wedding
Your wedding colors
Your wedding theme
Your budget
Your venue

The style of your wedding will determine whether you have a formal reception, such as a sit down meal with several courses or a more casual reception perhaps with a buffet. Your wedding colors will provide the backdrop to your reception decoration and will determine things like table cloths, chair covers, flowers, balloons etc. Usually brides will choose a combination of two or three colors, with one of those forming the main color used throughout (often white or ivory), the remaining colors then become accent colors in the smaller details such as flowers, table centers, napkins and decorations.

If you have chosen a wedding theme then this will be the main focus of your decoration. With a wedding theme it is important to research all the small details and elements that you want to include, otherwise your theme could fall flat and be lost on your guests. Try to be true to your theme in terms of colors and design, for instance, an art deco themed wedding is usually associated with a scheme of black and white, therefore using hot pink and aqua blue would not work! Likewise a medieval wedding theme with table centers of tall martini glasses filled with crystals and feathers would look totally out of place.

Your budget will dictate everything, from the scale of your decoration to your choice of wedding favors. Make sure you set a realistic sum for your reception decorations, especially if you are having a grand wedding theme. That, said, much can be achieved by making your own decorations, including table centers, favors and hanging decorations. So if your budget is tight make sure you explore your DIY options.

Venue’s can often be the deciding factor when it comes to how your reception will look. Whilst many venues can offer a blank canvas, allowing you to decorate them however you wish, others can be rather more grandiose, meaning you will need to work your decorations around existing colors, fixtures and fittings.

The best way around this it to pick your venue with your wedding style or theme in mind. A beach wedding would obviously be at the beach, whilst a 1930’s themed wedding could take place in a ballroom or theatre. If no suitable venue can be found then your best option would be to hire a marquee and pitch it in a garden or hotel grounds. “You may kiss the bride.”

We have all heard that phrase hundreds of times. In fact, I have spoken it hundreds of times, or something close to it, such as: “Please share your first kiss as a married couple,” “Seal it with a kiss” or “You may now smooch!”

But a kiss is not just a kiss in every culture. Shows of affection and wedding kisses vary around the world. Some families are more reserved than others, and it may influence the way you and your beloved show affection at the end of your wedding ceremony.

For example, while it is common in the west for the father of the bride to kiss his daughter the day of the wedding after he escorts her down the aisle, that gesture would be awkward or unheard of to Chinese or Korean dads and with parents from any culture where public affection is not common. On the other hand, I’ve seen Jewish fathers kiss their sons or new son-in-laws on the lips, British families kiss on both cheeks, and Slavic wedding guests kiss three times on alternating cheeks.

I have also seen every kiss and act of affection imaginable between bride and groom at the altar: A peck on the cheek, a hug, a fist bump, a long kiss on the lips, a series if kisses on the mouth, a full open-mouth tongue kiss, affectionate kissing through tears of joy, and kissing so passionately that friends and loved ones scream, “get a room.”

As much as we like to think of kissing as spontaneous, you would be surprised how much thought some brides put into the kiss. Having to contend with make-up, big dresses with trains, shyness, performance anxiety, and possibly conservative relatives, there is often talk in our consultations of how they will kiss and for how long.

Every culture has its feelings about kissing, and individuals have their preferences about public smooching as well, so it is something to be aware of on your wedding day. To avoid a kiss that turns out stressful or awkward, come up with a comfortable way to kiss at the wedding altar. Make sure you have fun practicing!

1. Consider your own level of comfort with public affection. If this is not something you or your mate are used to, you can do a very small, brief kiss just to seal your ceremony. I have married more than one bride who kissed her beloved on the cheek at the end of the ceremony, and that was just about as much that either one of them could handle.

2. Think about your family traditions. Are mom and dad affectionate with one another in public? Will seeing a big, wet wedding kiss make your grandmother faint? Does your family clank wine glasses with spoons or ring bells demanding that you kiss? What is the typical wedding kiss like in the culture you both hail from? Some couples adapt their kiss to the comfort level of the family.

3. Is one of you a bigger kisser than the other? Some couples don’t see eye to eye about kissing at the wedding. She wants a big smooch; he thinks it is disrespectful, and so on. It is good to get a sense of which way things will go on the big day, before the big day. Hell hath no furry like a woman whose lipstick has been kissed off before the photos are taken of the couple walking back up the aisle.

4. Go For It. When everything is said and done, it is your wedding and you can kiss any way you choose. There is no right or wrong way to kiss on your wedding day. Like anything else in the ceremony, having a sense of how you would like to kiss and be kissed can relieve any “performance” pressure.

The kiss is meant to be a joyous exclamation mark that brings the ceremony to happy close. It is a romantic way to transition from the end of the ceremony to the beginning or married life. It is also a moment to relax as you acknowledge: “The ceremony is over … and, yay, we’re married.”
